Piano Strings

Piano strings are made of steel and stretched almost to their breaking point. It is at these tensions that the strings vibrate more freely and for a longer duration. The guage, or thickness of the strings is increased every 3 or 4 notes. Beginning at the top end of the piano and working down, they become increasingly thicker, as more mass is needed to produce lower frequencies.

If the strings become rusted, or corroded, they usually become brittle and break. When this happens the piano would need a new set of strings.
